The Brits in Laax

Laax Halfpipe

Hi guys, I recently travelled out to Laax, Switzerland to compete in the British Freestyle Championships, The Brits!

I spent the first week with Andy Bennett and the the team from British Freeski Camps. It was the first time away from home on my own and first time flying without my parents, it was an interesting flight from Manchester to Zurich, a bit bumpy!

We spent the week training on rails, kickers and in the half pipe being coached by Andy. In addition to the skiing we had talks and demonstrations on fitness and nutrition as well as spending time in the brilliant Freestyle Academy Laax on trampolines and the airbag, check out the link, it was extremely fun and exiting!

The second week was the competition week. The first comp I competed in was slopestyle. After two days of waiting for the cloud to clear, the comp was called off and turned into a 3 run rail jam. I placed 24  out of 54. The second comp I competed in was half pipe where I was stoked to place joined 14th out of 34! It was the first time I had ridden the halfpipe, its massive, 22 foot high walls!

Riding into the clouds!

It was disappointing that most of the competition day’s were affected by the weather but had a great 2 weeks learning new skills and skiing with the rest of the team. I would like to thank coaches Andy Bennett, Rob Machon, James Webb and Emma Lonsdale for looking after me in the first week and coaching me over the 2 weeks. I had a really good time and hope to have more opportunities like that next season!

“We are delighted to offer these two talented teenagers the opportunity to train more and access even more opportunities to allow them to maximise their potential and fulfil their dreams,” said Jarrod Osborne Director Ski Olympic. “Our support, in addition to that of their families, will help them to focus on their ultimate goals and hopefully become professional sports people in the future.”

Millie currently specialises in Slopestyle and is ranked 2nd in her age group. Meanwhile Mason, who has been skiing since he was five also competes in the same discipline and has recently competed in the British Championships at Chill Factor in Manchester.

“We’ve become good training partners and encourage each other to push the boundaries making sure we keep improving all the time,” commented Millie. “Sponsorship is really important to us as it helps us to get the best out of all that is on offer to make us even better.”

Mason concluded, “We’ve enjoyed some fantastic training sessions at SnoZone Castleford and at the Halifax Ski Centre and can now make the most of all the opportunities that come our way thanks to the support of Jarrod and his team.”

Easter Shred – Learning to Fly!

Hi guys,

This is a short edit my dad did from my week in Courchevel 1650 in France last week.

I had a great time and the snow was good for the time of year.

At New Year I  worked more on boxes and rails but decided to practice my grabs and spins this time.

I use K2 Sight 2013 freestyle skis and Salomon spk 100 boots. The video was shot on 2 GoPro cameras.

The song for the video is “learn to fly” by the Foo Fighters.

Hope you like it?

Hitting the rail!

Hey guys

Here’s a selection of pics and a short video of me last night at Snozone Castleford. I’ve been skiing since I was 5 years old but have only been skiing freestyle since April 2013.

Since April I have come on loads. I started off going straight over boxes and just trying basic grabs such as safety grabs. As I progressed on I was starting 180’s. After that I started to do boxes sideways and different grabs such as mutes and other straight tricks like daffies. Just recently I have moved on to doing  360’s and rails sideways.
I love skiing and I just wanted to say thanks to the freestyle instructors at Xscape, Matt, Nick, Danny, Nubiel and Ian. These are the people who have helped me come on and progress to where I am now.

I hope in the future I can come on even more and start competing in competition when I feel the times right
